Blaby District Council Climate Change Strategy

Blaby District Council Climate Change Strategy

Climate Change Strategy ambitions confirmed

A commitment to tackling climate change has been made by Blaby District Council following the approval of the Climate Change Strategy.

The six-point strategy will see ambitions to make the Council carbon neutral by 2030, and the district carbon neutral by 2050. It provides a vision for a Green Recovery, post Covid-19, to create sustainable communities, low carbon transport networks and a thriving local economy.

Blaby District Council is looking to significantly reduce carbon emissions through the use of renewable energy as well as supporting communities to adapt to a changing climate and more frequent extreme weather events.

To meet national housing targets and reduce emissions, the Council will need to use it's influence to encourage and enable the construction of zero carbon homes with on-site renewable energy which will provide sustainable, lifelong housing. This housing will achieve high levels of energy efficiency and ultra low carbon emissions.

In new and existing communities the Council wants to create more space for nature, increase biodiversity, improve our parks and green spaces and develop more walking and cycling routes.

Councillor Sharon Coe, Portfolio Holder for Health, Wellbeing and Regulatory Services, said: "We are facing a global climate emergency, and we must play a vital role at a local level to reduce our impact on the environment. We need to act now to reduce carbon emissions to net zero and protect future generations.

"Achieving our vision will not be easy but we have an exciting opportunity to address the challenge of climate change

"We want to reduce our carbon footprint, deliver sustainable new homes, create a district with more green spaces and places for our children to play, in cleaner air, with jobs and opportunities for all."
